About the Book

Who are my At-Risk Students?

At-risk students are the most memorable ones in our building—we see them walking the halls after the bell has run; they are boisterous and generally come to school every day. They’re on your mind first thing in the morning, with a new strategy you plan to try with them.  They have the most personality and end up being that student you will always remember—and they will come back to visit you after moving to the next grade, after graduation, or even 10 years later.

On the other hand, at-risk students are faced with challenges that other students in the class may not experience. There are circumstances they have experienced in their lives that could jeopardize their ability to complete school such as: Homelessness; Poverty; Being a juvenile delinquent or Incarceration; Teenage pregnancy; Serious health issues; Domestic violence; Transiency (as in the case of migrant worker families), or other conditions, and  Students in dual-language education.

Other conditions at-risk students may possess are truancy issues. It may also refer to learning disabilities, low test scores, disciplinary problems, and grade retention. Regardless of the category you find the student—without consistent interventions from you, they are more likely to fail or drop out of school.

I wrote this book to help you build a special relationship with each at-risk student, and to equip you with what you need to deal with the added layers of psychological damage from poverty, drug, or alcohol abuse, physical and/or verbal abuse which some of these students experience daily at home.

“As a former colleague of  Dr. Millicent Sweeting, I can honestly say I can’t think of anyone more suited to write a book on this topic.  As the principal of the middle school where she taught in Camden County, Georgia, I knew we could always count on her to accept and be successful in any challenge presented.  Her ability to connect with at-risk students and have them understand she values them as individuals, leads to them believing in themselves, which leads to them becoming more successful in the classroom.”

– Mark Durham, Assistant Superintendent, Nassau County (FL) School District

Dr. Sweeting is truly a gem and an advocate for students, their learning, and their experiences. Dr. Sweeting creates experiences in her classroom from daily living to virtual field trips. She is eager to provide excellence.”

“It is such a pleasure working with Dr. Sweeting and watching her build positive relationships with her students in a fun and engaging learning environment. I always joke about her sprinkling “fairy dust” as she consistently assists students with making progress in her class. The growth and love for learning they experience has students asking about her years after they have left her class.”

~Dr. Dawn M. Harrell, Support and Services Administrator, Cobb County (GA) School District

As an educator, we know first-hand that providing students with strategies that are research-based is a win-win for the student, parents, and the community. I truly believe that building a relationship with each student is primary. Continue to get the word out.”
